Killer Angels by Michael Shaara Essay - 1261 Words
Killer Angels by Michael Shaara The Killer Angels is an awesome and vivid story about the battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg was one of the most bloody and horrific battle of the American Civil War. Author Michael Shaara does an excellent job of showing the bravery and valor of the men fighting on both sides. The story begins in a town near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in the town of Taneytown on June 29, 1863. Harrison, a spy for the confederacy, returns to General Longstreet late in the night and tells him about the Union troops he spotted moving closer to their camp and could ambush them at any time. Longstreet doesnt believe Harrison at first but Harrison is able to convince him eventually. Longstreetâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Longstreet reports to Lee that the new commander of the Union forces is George Meade, and that he believes the Union Forces have occupied Gettysburg. He suggests battle tactics to Lee but they are turned down because they are too defensive. The confederate forces begin to attack General Bufords troops in Gettysburg and are being overwhelmed until General Reynolds troops arrive to help. Reynolds is shot and killed when he arrives and his troops fight without a commander. It shifts over to General Lee who is just arriving at the battle. Hes annoyed because he has had no information about any of this because Stuart is still no where to be found. Lee wants to fight the Union head on and does not retreat his troops or listen to Longstreets tactics. Lee will not listen to Longstreet, and Lees reticence makes Longstreet depressed. Longstreet starts to think about his children who died from fever over the winter, and he becomes even more depressed. He knows that the army is all that is left of meaning to him. Lee meets with three other generals to discuss strategies, Ewell, Rhodes, and Early. He wants Ewell to attack the right of the northern army the next day, and the other armies to move to the southeast and block the Union from Washington D.C., which was Longstreets idea. Lee goes to bed, and now General Buford of the Union is surveying the Hill that was taken by his forces earlier. The store in Shanghai is now one of many wholly owned subsidiaries in mainland china. A wholly owned store is when the company has full ownership as oppose to going into business with another investor or retailer abroad. Due to the fact their stores are wholly owned this draws up many advantages for MS such as keeping control of their stores, which is a big factor when abroad as foreign investors could go against your beliefs and damage your reputation however because of this it can be seen as a disadvantage as you may not be experienced in the market and the advice of a partner when doing business abroad could prove to be beneficial. Another major advantage is that profit is maximised as you do not have to split it with any one else. In MS case in China it comes as an added advantage that it is a very attractive country to do business in due to low wages and lower corporation tax if any. However a wholly owned entry strategy faces some disadvantages; MS will be making a significantly large investment this could lead to financial exposure. On top of this by rapidly expanding abroad they are involved in long term commitment and if something goes wrong within a country it can lead to huge losses. MS stores tend to only be wholly owned within the UK and Republic of Ireland, and it comes as a surprise as to whyShow MoreRelatedMarks Spencer s International Strategies2201 Words à |à 9 Pagesto which Marks Spencerââ¬â¢s international strategies have succeeded or failed Student Name: Xin Fan Student Number: 200895952 Submission Date: 3rd September 2014 Tutor: Greg Watson Word count: 1940 Contents 1. Policy and Program Evaluation Strategies
Question: Discuss about the Policy and Program Evaluation Strategies. Answer: Introduction The entire world is facing the problems of refugees (Wrench 2012). The main countries, which are having a tough time with the refugees, are the European countries and Australia (Dustmann, Frattini and Lanzara 2012). When on one hand, the immigrants facing the problems in their country, on the other hand, the host country who are taking the refugees are also having a tough time (Wrench 2012). The main reason behind the problem is the effect on the economy of the host country (Dustmann, Frattini and Lanzara 2012). Hence, the research was carried to study the policies and the strategies that the host countries have developed to support the immigrants. The policies would have helped the host country to balance the intake of the immigrants and the management of the countrys resources. They also evaluate whether the immigrants will be beneficial for the country. Depending in a number of factors, the intakes of the immigrants take place. The critical review of the research would be helpful to understand whether all the aspects of the research have been carried out properly. Whenever a researcher is doing a research, it is important that the researcher give special attention to the aspects like, the literature review, the methodology and the conclusion and recommendation of the research. In addition to this, the citations after the information are also required in the academic writing. The write-up will throw light on the strength and weakness of the research that have been done before. The write-up will evaluate the literature review, the methodology, the language used in the research, the flow of topics in the research. It will help the research to critically look into the research work and avoid the problems that have been identified in the write-up. As a whole, it will enhance the quality of the research work in future. Purpose of evaluation The purpose of evaluation of the report is quite clearly as it is mentioned by the author. The report properly mentions that it will focus on the current policies that are applicable to the immigrant coming to Australia. The report will further discuss about the application of the policies when it comes to application the immigrants in Australia. The purpose mentions all aspects of the policy like the overview of the policy, the discussion of the problems when it is applied on then public and the application that will help the government to overcome the issues. However, the main problem with the part is that it has been written in the introduction part. It would have been better if the purpose of the evaluation were mentioned by giving a separate sub-topic. In addition to this, the introduction part has no reference even when there is various information like the presence of the policies, which are being applied on the immigrants. It would have been better if the author more about th e policies in the introduction part and explained the purpose separately in another part. Even if the purpose is mentioned under introduction, the author could have highlighted the part so that it visible at once. Major Issues Discussion of the literature review The literature review has been carried out quite well by the author. The author has taken into consideration a number of countries that take the immigrants (Geisler 2013). The author mentions the point systems that that is required to maintain a balance between the skilled labors who are immigrants to the country and the need of the labor market of the country. The author has differentiated between the selection and the settlement policies (Dias et al. 2013). The point system is a part of the selection policies. The settlement policies include the selection of the places that will help the immigrants to settle. As the populations of the immigrants are rising, the availability of places for the immigrants are also decreasing, hence the settlement policy has become important for the hosts country that will help them to make arrangement the refugees well in Australia. The network effect helps the host country to determine whether taking the refugees will be have positive or negative eff ect on the country. By evaluating, the network of the host country will be able to understand whether they can take any more refugees or where they should stop. On the other hand, the literature review, reviews the problems faced by the immigrants in the host country (Bygate, Swain and Skehan 2013). There is discrimination in work and salary of the employees. Thus, it could be seen that the author has taken into consideration the perspective of the host country as well as the perspective of the refugees while carrying out the research work (Gillett, Hammond and Martala 2013). However, there are certain gaps in the literature review done by the author. In-text citations are missing at various places, which are important for any writing (Silva and Matsuda 2013). The author has mentioned the discriminations faced by the immigrants at work but mentioning some of the examples, which could have made the writing stronger (Callies and Zaytseva 2013). Inclusion of some of the interviews by any immigrants who have faced such discriminations at work would have been realistic (Dias et al. 2013). The person could have then thrown light on the steps taken by the government for the immigrants. The policies that could have been related to the feedback of the refugees. In that way, the claim of the author regarding the policies implemented by the government could have been stronger. Organization of the literature review Critical evaluation The literature has been reviewed in the context of the rising demand of the workers who are skilled. It has been reviewed that the demand for the skilled workers has been exceeding their supply. A survey has also been conducted in which China, the United States of America and Australia has been reported to be the major countries in which the demands for the best employees are increasing. A survey has also been conducted in which it clearly states that the demands for the low-skilled workers have been rising in Australia as compared to that of the high-skilled workers. However, the methods could have been used appropriately to determine the literature. The literature review has been written only in the context of a theory that in the context of the qualitative method, however there could have been proper incitation which could have provided a better understanding of the research. The literature review has been written somewhat in the context of the major contributors that is the infor mation regarding the countries where the demands for high-skilled workers as well as low-skilled workers are increasing. The author had used the qualitative method where the person has investigated and used the words rather than numbers (Jaumotte et al. 2013). Difference of the Report It makes a difference to the way the report has been structured. If the methods were used appropriately in that case a proper survey with both close-ended and open-ended questions could have been conducted. This survey would help to give the detailed information regarding the percentage and the ratio of the demand for high-skilled and low-skilled workers in the different countries that are mentioned. In that case, it would have become easier to understand the in-depth information regarding the review. There could have been a nut and bolt information regarding the review and the methods could have been used. The author has given some information related to the policies that helps to increase the incorporation of financial and social process. The proper use of methodology would have helped to provide the appropriate information regarding the literature. The author would have provided some information regarding the quantitative method. He could have provided the information about the de mand and supply of the workers in quantities as well as numbers. The author could have mentioned about the broad opinion from which precise methods may be derived in order to provide a better in-depth survey. The research question was necessary in this review and there was also the requirement of the primary data and the secondary data. The survey which is conducted should include the detailed structured so as to give the in-depth information. The author should have provided the survey by conducting some interviews that could give the information by collecting information broadly (Mackey and Gass 2015). Literature review compared to the report The author has basically used the existing literature in the form of a theory and has provided some basic information related to the demand and supply of the high-skilled and low-skilled workers in diverse countries. The literature review lacks the methodology in terms of quantitative method; it lacks the research question as well as the survey design (Hardin and Haber 2015). Types of methods used In this report, the qualitative method has been used mainly. The qualitative method is the method of investigation, which is utilized in different natural and communal academic disciplines which includes the social sciences as well as the natural sciences. It is mainly a wide methodological approach that includes many research methods. However, instead of using the qualitative method in this research the author did not generate any data from any governmental studies or any participant observation. However, the author provided the information related to development and practice as well as case studies. The author tried to provide a concentrated study of a precise case study. In order to analyze the qualitative method it is very important to gather data from all the sources that are available. The qualitative methods are mainly the part of the survey methodology which in turn does not influence the variables. It gives the proper information and gives a detailed understanding (Taylor et al. 2015). In this research, the author has mainly used the grounded theory of the qualitative method where the information has been provided by considering the observation and the surveys. As a result, the author was able to provide the solution that in order to meet the demand it is very important to focus on immigration. The information regarding the failure of the European country to become the primary destination for high-skilled immigrants has also been provided by going through a survey methodology. The author has also focused on the fact that it is quite crucial to consider the qualifications and the skills of the immigrants to determine whether they are capable to exceed the demand of the labor market. In spite of using these methods, the proper in-depth information is lacking. It would have been more convenient if the author made use of the quantitative method. The author should have given more emphasized on the statistical, arithmetical as well as the mathematical analysis of the dat a that in turn would have helped to gain knowledge about the research. The conducting of the questionnaires would have been more appropriate (Tesch 2013). Advantages and disadvantages of the method As it can be seen that the author mainly took the help of the qualitative research to complete the research work. However, the qualitative research has its own advantages as well disadvantages. The advantages of using qualitative research are that the researcher can include open-ended questions to carry out the research (Miller et al. 2012). It does not limit the researcher to a set of questions and give the scope to the researcher to explore the anything and everything (Miller et al. 2012). The data collected through qualitative research have more strength than the quantitative data as it give the speaker the chance to talk about the positive as well as the negative aspects of the topic on which the researcher is carrying out the research (Neuman and Robson 2012). On the contrary, there are certain disadvantages of the qualitative research. The skill of the researcher is hugely responsible in gathering the information from the participants (O'Reilly and Parker 2012). Thus, there is high chance of biasness in such cases. The researcher might ask the questions in such a manner that the participants are made to speak out things that the researcher supports (O'Reilly and Parker 2012). When a researcher tries to carry out a research, there are issues of confidentiality (Neuman and Robson 2012). If the researcher is doing a quantitative research, the researcher can easily hide the name of the participants. However, in case of qualitative research, it becomes difficult for the richer to hide the identity of the participants as it need a lot of description. As the qualitative research needs a lot of description, it might happen that the researcher had to let out the information about the participants (O'Reilly and Parker 2012). The researcher has to then take the consent of the participants for any such revelation or it will call uninvited troubles for the researcher. Evaluation of the secondary data The author has mainly taken into consideration the secondary data. When the researcher is focusing on the secondary research, it is important to do a thorough research of every aspect (Liese et al. 2013). The author has made the secondary data comprehensive as much as possible. However, there are certain things that have been missed out in the secondary data. In the place where the author has talked about the roles played by the European countries in taking the migrants, the authors have missed out the citations. The author has clearly mentioned the principles that have been implemented to the intervention for the policies applicable while taking the immigrants in the country (Clark 2013). The difference between the European countries and Australia has also been mention by the author as far as the intervention principles are concerned. The author further talked about the discrimination faced by the immigrants after coming to the new location. There are gaps in the salary of the immig rants and the normal citizens. There are gaps that have been seen for the international and the national citizens. The immigrants had to face the discrimination as far as the behaviors at the workplace are concerned. The authority of the workplace behave differently towards the immigrants as they have migrated from another country. The authors have said that the Australian government has implemented certain policies that will help in ending the discriminatory behavior towards the immigrants of Australia. However, the author has failed to mention some of the policies and acts that been implemented for the immigrants and for the purpose of their protections (Mercier et al. 2013). There are three types of protection for the on-shore immigrants. Protection visa (Class XA) (Subclass 866) is for those immigrants who have arrived the country legally (Border.gov.au. 2016). Temporary Protection visa (Class XD) (Subclass 785) are for those who have entered the country illegally (Border.gov.au . 2016). Safe Haven Enterprise visa (Class XE) (Subclass 790) are for the once who have arrived illegally but wish to study or work in the country as they could not back to the country where they came from (Border.gov.au. 2016). The Australian government has introduced the offshore resettlement for the people who are willing to come to Australia because they do not have any other places to go due the bad conditions of the country (Border.gov.au. 2016). The offshore resettlement is being divided into two categories: Refugee category Special Humanitarian Programme (SHP) category These are some of the important measures taken by the government of Australia, which are missed in the discussion by the author. The researcher has mainly used the secondary data to talk about the policies that have been implemented for the immigrants and the conditions that are being faced by the immigrants face after coming to Australia. However, the author did not make any sue of the graphs or the charts that would show the flow of the immigrants in the country. Type of language The author has made use of simple sand clear language while doing the research. The author has not made use of any jargon. As a result, all types of readers will be able to understand the topic of the research and the what the researcher has been trying to say (Iriki and Taoka 2012). However, there are some uses of colloquial English, which might not be accepted in the academic writing (VygotskiÃâà , Hanfmann and Vakar 2012). The use of term also in the beginning of a sentence is one such example. The author could have used terms like, in addition to or moreover in such places (Bygate, Swain and Skehan 2013). It would have been perfect for research work. The researcher could use the word also but that would be in rare cases. Inclusion of technical terms would have been better for the work. The author has used general terms and words to make the readers understand the policies and the strategies used by the government to help the immigrants in the country. The author should have used some of the technical terms that would have made the write-up stronger (Richards and Schmidt 2013). The mention of the specific polices and the acts passed by the government could have enhanced the quality of the write-up (Bygate, Swain and Skehan 2013). The use of legal terms would have made the readers aware of the exact legal steps taken by the government for the protection of the immigrants (VygotskiÃâà , Hanfmann and Vakar 2012). The presence of glossary for the terms that have been used in the research would have helped the readers. Once a researcher is carrying out a research, the researcher should have used certain terms that will be helpful for the readers to refer if they are unable to understand any of the term that has been used by the researcher (Iriki and Taoka 2012). Evaluation of the recommendation The recommendation of the research is not strong enough. A research requires a separate part for the recommendations. In addition to this, the conclusion is only drawn for research but there is no mention of recommendations (Andrews et al. 2013). Recommendation is an important part of a research. Recommendation helps the researcher to understand what are the areas that are left for future research works (Cohen, Manion and Morrison 2013). In addition to this, the recommendations also helps the reader to understand the exact areas that have been covered in the research and what are the ways through which the research could have been better (Ary et al. 2013). The recommendation is an indication that the researcher has understood the problems in the society or any other area and then makes the readers understand the ways the specific problem that could be solved (Ekman, Friesen and Ellsworth 2013). Hence, it is important the researcher to conclude as well as recommend. The author has dra wn the conclusion after evaluating the policies and programs for the immigrants. The author has drawn the conclusion well by saying the most of the studies mainly evaluate the shortterm effect but not the long-term effects (Andrews et al. 2013). However, the author mentions that there is a scope for further consideration in the research, yet the specific areas that require further research is not mentioned by the authors (Ary et al. 2013). Hence, there is a necessity of the recommendation along with the conclusion. Conclusion After evaluating and critically analyzing the research work, it can be said that there are certain strength and weakness in the solution. The author has written the literature review by taking into consideration the perspective of the host country and the perspective of the immigrants. The author has talked about the problems faced by the immigrants in the new country. However, even if the author has talked about the policies but the research has failed to mention the specific policies that will help in supporting the immigrants, the mention of the policies would have made the write-up stronger. The author has used the qualitative research. However, the qualitative research, is helpful for the research in many aspects, yet it has many short-comings. The author should have used quantitative research along with the qualitative research so that it would have helped the research to evaluate all the aspects of the research. The author has not used any jargon and hence, it made the researc h easy for the readers to understand. However, the author have not included any glossary of the term and not used any technical terms. The technical terms and the glossary is an important part of the research, the readers will be benefitted if they are able to refer to the terms to understand the research. However, the main problem of the research is the absence of proper recommendation. The author has included a conclusion in the write-up. The author has said that there is a scope of future research where the policies could be reviewed. The author has mention that the policies help in evaluating the short-term problems about do not solve any long-term problems. This is a main problem that has been identified in the research and will help in future researchers to identify the long-term problems. Unit 9 Nvq Level 3 Essay Example Essay Example
Unit 9 Nvq Level 3 Essay Example Paper Unit 9 Nvq Level 3 Essay Introduction Unit 9 1. 1 As a nursery nurse you need to contribute to a programme of age-appropriate activities designed to stimulate the children you are working with: â⬠¢ Keep an accurate record of achievement file on your key children â⬠¢ Be a pro-active team member, offering appropriate support to your colleagues â⬠¢ Liaise with and support parents and other family members â⬠¢ Attend ALL out of working hours activities, e. g. training, monthly staff meetings, parentsââ¬â¢ evenings, summer fayre, Christmas party, etc. â⬠¢ Be flexible within working practices of the Nursery. Be prepared to help where needed, including domestic jobs within the Nursery, e. g. preparation of snack meals, cleaning equipment etc. â⬠¢ Work with the Manager and her team to ensure that the Nurseryââ¬â¢s philosophy is reflected â⬠¢ Record accidents in the accident book. Make sure that parents read and sign the report. â⬠¢ Look at the Nursery as a ââ¬Ëwholeââ¬â¢, where your hel p is most needed and how you can most effectively meet the needs of the children in your care â⬠¢ Make sure that every child is collected by someone known to the Nursery â⬠¢ Respect the confidentiality of information received Develop your role within the team, especially your role as a key worker â⬠¢ Specified Child Care Tasks: a. Prepare and complete activities that match the childââ¬â¢s stage of development b. Make sure that mealtimes are a time of pleasant social sharing c. Wash and change children as required d. Provide comfort and warmth to an unhappy or sick child â⬠¢ Help to make sure that the environment meets the needs of Nursery children, reflecting their cultures and religious backgrounds, and stages of development â⬠¢ Be aware of the high profile of the Nursery and to uphold its standards at all times. . 2 In my role I am expected to support the staff, to be reliable and build a good relationship with the children, encouraging them to the best of t heir ability in their learning, to assist their growth in knowledge and assist in enhancing their development, so they can grow holistically. To be aware of any weak areas that I come across whilst working with the children, for example a child that may need extra support within their numeracy, literacy or phonics time. I am also expected to deal, to the best of my ability, with challenging aggressive, rude or traumatised children. Unit 9 Nvq Level 3 Essay Body Paragraphs Whilst I may need to do this at times I am also aware that the class teacher is there for support. I have had to deal with bad language used by a pupil when dealing with the child I explained that the words used where not words that should be used. I found out why the pupil had said those words and asked what words we could use instead. As well as working with my own class teacher I can be asked at times to go and support another teacher in another class. I am expected to adapt very quickly to the other class and to the lesson there having. My role also means that I will support the children so they are confident in their journey though the school. It is important that I conduct myself in the correct manner within the school as children will often mirror others actions. I remain professional at all times and act appropriately. 2. 1 As part of our job role it is important to carry out reflective practice especially because we work with children/young people and our effectiveness will have an impact on them and their learning. Reflective practice means thinking about and evaluating what you do and discussing any changes which could be made. This means focusing on how we interact with colleagues, service users and the environment. It means thinking about how we could have done something differently, what we did well, what we could have done better. How we can improve what you have done. It also means reflecting our own values, beliefs and experiences which shape our thoughts and ideas. This will allow us to obtain a clearer picture of your own behaviour and a better understanding of our strengths and weaknesses- so that we can learn from our own mistakes and take appropriate future actions. Improving the quality of our performance: ââ¬â Allows us an objective look at our practice in order to improve ââ¬â Helps us to recognise what we do well so that we can apply these skills in other situations ââ¬â Improves professional judgment ââ¬â Helps us to learn from successes and mistakes to enhance development ââ¬â Helps us to plan for future situations and therefore respond more positively to change ââ¬â Enables us to apply the skill of reflection to the personal development cycle Reflective practice allows us to support the children better and better- if we have concerns about how the session went we can look back and work out what more we could have done. We may have used one resource and found it useful and then choose it again with another child. 2. 3 Everyone has different values, beliefs and preferences. What you believe in, what you see as important and what you see as acceptable or desirable is an essential part of who you are. The way in which you respond to people is linked to what you believe in, what you consider important and what interests you. You may find you react positively to people who share your values and less warmly to people who have different priorities. When you develop friendships, it is natura l to spend time with people who share your interests and values. However, the professional relationships you develop with people you support are another matter. As a professional, you are required to provide the same quality of support for all, not just for those who share your views and beliefs. This may seem obvious, but knowing what you need to do and achieving it successfully is not the same thing. 3. 1 It is a nursery nurseââ¬â¢s duty to provide a safe, warm and caring environment where children feel welcomed and loved and are able to learn and develop at their own pace, with guidance and supervision as appropriate, in order that parent may have peace of mind to go to work knowing that their childââ¬â¢s well-being is paramount. The duties and responsibilities are: â⬠¢ To listen to parents as experts on their own children, to respect families traditions and childcare practices and to follow parentsââ¬â¢ wishes as closely as possible within the context of caring for children from several different families. â⬠¢ To plan and provide activities and resources appropriate to each childââ¬â¢s age, stage of development and individual needs and interests with due regard the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). â⬠¢ To provide a safe environment, both at the child minders property and on outings. To teach children safe practices and to hold a current first aid certificate. â⬠¢ To maintain discipline and encourage positive behaviour. â⬠¢ To be aware of the signs and symptoms which indicate the possibility of abuse and to be aware of the current procedure for reporting concerns. â⬠¢ To provide a varied nutritional menu with due regard to the dietary requirements of each child, parents wishes and the current professional recommendations for childrenââ¬â¢s diets. â⬠¢ To provide a healthy environment and to encourage children to make healthy choices. To liaise with and, where necessary, to seek advice from pro fessionals, with due regard to confidentiality, including preschool leaders, school teachers, health visitor. â⬠¢ To adhere to requirements set out by relevant authorities such as Ofsted, insurance providers, inland revenue. â⬠¢ To comply with relevant legislation such as that covering health and safety, food hygiene, fire or planning requirements and to keep appropriate records with due regard to confidentiality. â⬠¢ To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). A child minder should also love and nurture every child so they grow confident and strong and develop into healthy and caring young people and adults. 4. 1 While at work it helps me when I have an appraisal meeting with the manager, this is because I can pick out the things I think I do best and the things I donââ¬â¢t do as good as I should be doing. This is also useful as the manager will have some points to speak to me about things so then I can use these to help me become a professio nal nursery practitioner. Itââ¬â¢s also useful when I get supervised through new things e. when I first got key children I got so much help and supervision through this that it made me become stronger at work. 5. 1 The reasons why it is important to evaluate learning activities are: â⬠¢ To see what is working and what needs removing or changing â⬠¢ To assess how the activities are being delivered and how they could be improved â⬠¢ To see how the activities are being received by the participants Evaluation is important as it helps out when planning and helps you to think about the learning that has taken place. Spending time going through the learning activities and seeing how students have responded to a certain task or question, can really help re-shape it for future classes. It is also important to look back at the learning objects so you can measure what the children have learned. If you do not think carefully about learning objectives at the planning stage, it will not always be possible to evaluate whether pupils have achieved them. Learning objectives need to be clear for this to be possible. â⬠¢ Learners must understand what the outcomes mean. â⬠¢ They must be achievable. â⬠¢ We must be able to assess pupils against them. Evaluating helps you to see if something is succeeding or may need changing. If students whizzed through the activity and then looked rather bored then it would be obvious that the task was a bit too easy and not really suitable or beneficial for that group. Therefore you would need to try and make it more engaging and stimulating, perhaps by making it more difficult or time-consuming so the students really have to work to complete it. If the activities are taking longer than expected and you can see that the students are really struggling, things again would need to be addressed. Teaching in U.S Cellular Company
Teaching in U.S Cellular Company Learning is an intuitive process that helps to mould a person into a complete human being. Through learning, people become great leaders. This is the main reason why people learn new ideas and skills in order to change their lives. Tom Griffin, who works with United States Cellular in the department of learning and teaching, concurs with this ideology. Throughout his career, Griffin has learnt that character detaches good things and people from the great things and people.Advertising We will write a custom article sample on Teaching in U.S Cellular Company specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More To him, character is a personal philosophy that is imperative to learning. For example, character is paramount in determining the ability of a child to learn things and grow to apply them in life. In addition to this, character is such a vital factor in human beings because it helps in identifying and detaching great from good and eventually defines personal identity in a person. In order to be a successful leader of an organization or country, a person ought to exhibit strong character values, high level of moral ethicalness, and be real. Thus, people learn to become great leaders. To become a great leader, a person must learn from others and practice a lot. In fact, most organizations understand the importance of learning especially in making great leaders. For example, United States Cellular synchronizes learning and business into a single entity in order to produce great leaders who will enhance results. For instance, employees learn how to develop organizational culture, initiate change and create avenues of achieving high-level capability. As the person in-charge of learning and teaching in U.S Cellular Company, Griffin has the mandate to ensure employees execute their roles to perfection. However, this can never be true unless employees agree to learn new skills. Furthermore, employees of strong character feel good when they learn new things, which they know very well will make them great leaders. A strong character is an ingredient of strong leadership. Nevertheless, strong character only comes through learning. Thus, if persons subject themselves into learning, they will definitely become great leaders and strategists who can pull the crowd and lead them towards success.Advertising Looking for article on business economics? The philosophy of strong character not only leads to great leadership but also, plots priorities, ensures discharge and designs answerability. Hence, through learning, persons become capable leaders who can lead organizations into high-level achievers. One of the surest ways of learning in an organization is by conversation. Undeniably, discussions encourage re flection and ability to acquire more skills through learning from other peopleââ¬â¢s character. Just like in school discussions, each leader would want to show competency hence, action reflection. When an individual engages in self-reflection, it means such a person seeks to improve leadership behaviors in order to be successful. Thus, through dialogue, leaders can improve their character and become great leaders. Perhaps this is the reason why organization that engages employees into discussions becomes dynamic and successful. This is because, through dialogue, leaders are able to identify various modes such as leadership skills, standards and ideologies that make people great leaders. In addition, organizations require leaders who are able to motivate others to reflect on their personal goals and objectives in tandem with the organizationââ¬â¢s philosophy. Such leaders can initiate a successful business model characterized by effectiveness and satisfaction. In addition to di alogue, organizations are looking forward to advance their learning strategies by introducing e ââ¬âlearning, restructuring business model and look for modalities of connecting organizational erudition and recital. By doing this, employees will learn new skills to become great leaders. (Wickman, 2010, p.1) Reference List Wickman, L. E. To Good Health essays
To Good Health essays Public healthcare is one of the five dimensions of policy views, falling under the category of How big should the government be? However, unlike some of the other policies that are included in this category, healthcare is relevant and important to every citizen because everyone is affected by their health everyday. It is for this reason that the federal government should provide adequate healthcare for all citizens of the United States. Although the cost of implementing and maintaining a healthcare system where all citizens are covered would be immense, the overall benefits outweigh the cost. Experts have estimated the cost of reforming healthcare would definitely be a multi-billion dollar task, and this is the foremost reason most are opposed to a nationally-run healthcare system. However, if citizens are provided with sufficient immunizations, regular check-ups, and prescriptions then their health will vastly improve, and a healthy citizen is a productive one. There would be less sick-days taken, resulting in an immediate increase in productivity, not to mention the higher morale that goes along with being healthy. According to the National Center for Health Statistics there are currently 16.8%, or 40.5 million people, under the age of 65 without health insurance. The rising cost of healthcare and prescription drugs makes it a necessity for the federal government to step in and reform the healthcare shortag e in America. Despite some critics views that healthcare reform is a states responsibility, history has shown that the federal government is the one with the financial means to support a comprehensive new program. In the 1960s and 70s Vermont, Massachusetts, and Oregon tried to implement programs to cover their citizens healthcare costs, but the programs ultimately failed because of the lack of financial resources the states had. The attempts by these three states ...

Post-Modern Anthropology Dissertation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Post-Modern Anthropology - Dissertation Example Postmodern anthropology provided solutions that religion did not fathom to the problem of mental illness. Over long time religion patented that madness could only be controlled but not cured, but with advent of the anthropological theory, ââ¬Å"religion was part of the movement which indicated in spite of everything the presence of reason of madness and which led from insanity to healthâ⬠(Michael and Richard 1961:394). The understanding of the real nature of madness helped in deriving a way the fear that had been passing down like an evocation of a common nature. Before the adoption of the contemporary anthropology, the society was encapsulated with an error that alienated the people of their freedom and joy. As a result of the theory, madness could cause no more fear and the solitary attitude and character that existed between the sane and the madman disappeared. The use of such theory enabled the understanding of the ancient mythical methods of treatments of such illnesses i n the olden society and also provided the cause of such diseases thereby enabling the acquisition of medication. ââ¬Å"The obscure guilt that once linked transgression and unreason is thus shifted; the madman, as human being originally endowed with reason is no longer guilty of being madâ⬠and can instead now feel morally responsible and respected especially because the disease can be treated. Natural religion which was mostly a local curesââ¬â¢ concern proved effective. It made use of the benevolence of nature to cure.

I Can Change the World One Tooth at a Time! :: Dentistry Admissions Essays
I Can Change the World One Tooth at a Time! Ã Ever since childhood I have enjoyed working with my hands. Whether as an eight year- old gluing together a model car or an adolescent assembling a bookshelf in woodworking class, I thrived on the challenges of precise and meticulous tasks. Throughout high school I have been intrigued by the sciences, but it was not until I read about late-breaking discoveries and research in the field of genetics that my interests in science intensified. When I entered the University of British Columbia (UBC), I naturally chose to specialize in Cell Biology and Genetics. Ã In my sophomore year at UBC, I first began to seriously consider dentistry as a career. At that time, I began to appreciate the important role that dentistry played in my life. Four years earlier, I began an orthodontic treatment program with Dr. Junni Wang to correct a severe crowding problem with my teeth. Both before and during the treatment, I was a most reluctant participant; not many teenagers look forward to braces filling their mouth during their last two years of high school, and I was no different. Ã However, at every monthly check-up for three-and-a-half years the office staff had nothing but kind words of encouragement and optimism. Now after the completion of the treatment I had reason to smile. Dr. Wang helped turn me from a shy adolescent who feared smiling into a confident, outgoing young man. His skills not only brought back my smile, but also my sense of confidence in all aspects of my life. Whereas once I feared drawing attention to myself and thus shied away from leadership posts and debates, now I am a completely different person. Hoping to feel as satisfied and gratified as Dr. Wang must have felt in improving not only my smile but my entire way of life, I look forward to improving the oral health of patients on a daily basis and participating in dentistry' s friendly, team-oriented work environment. Ã After this preliminary ' patient-doctor' exposure to dentistry, I substantially increased my involvement in the field to determine if dentistry really was for me. My participation with the UBC Pre-Dental Society allowed me to communicate with various professionals in the field. I also investigated opportunities to volunteer in the University Dental Clinic or participate in research work.

Discussion of the four types of budgeting system
In Business terms if we talk about budgeting it is the ability of a manager to plan and allocate the available funds to different departments of the organization. This enables the organization to efficiently allocate the funds to more productive areas and cut back expenses from the less productive areas. This includes utilization of assets to generate income and public relationships. Normally budgeting is done by accountants, financial experts and representative of the respective department whose budget is being formed (Wisegeek, n.d, n.p)In daily life also budgeting is an effective way to determine the monthly living expenses keeping in view the bills of previous month. Say for example if an individual is earning $4,500 per month, by deducting his known bills from this amount before they even come, he can forecast his household budget, now instead of assigning fixed dollar amounts he can assign percentages to the rest of the sundries (Wisegeek, n.d, n.p).A successful budget is neithe r too strict nor too lenient but a balance between the two extremes because there are some expenses which are to be paid in full so it should be the strict side of the budget. In organizations, each and every department should know their upper limits on spending. The reason of forming a periodic budget is to have a clear cut view of the limits in term of expenditure (Wisegeek, n.d, n.p).Another view in budgeting is that not every project can be assigned a fixed dollar amount because an organization cannot forecast each and every expense and here comes the lenient side of the budget in which we are working with the percentages. Also there is always the chance of unexpected which requires immediate attention, so in that case if an organization or individual has fixed his budget he they would not be able to change or reallocate it. So what accountants and financial experts do is that they regularly adjust the figures according to their needs (Wisegeek, n.d, n.p).When the inflow of income is greater than the outflow most of the people negligent about budgeting, but those who have formed a practical budget and they follow it can survive even greater financial setbacks (Wisegeek, n.d, n.p).Traditional (Incremental) BudgetingTraditional or incremental budgeting is the most common type of budgeting used today, which includes forecasting for the whole year and no change is bought in the whole budgeting period. Because of simplicity and easy coordination traditional approach is mostly liked by the organizations (lmmattersonline, n.d, n.p).Imperative approach now a day is criticized from modern organizations. They say that this type of budgeting no longer serves the needs of organization, because mostly budget is timed incorrectly (for too long or for too short) period, depends on wrong measures (too basic or too composite), also too stiff in changing global environment and some times too political (which shows that benefits are only derived by upper management)If we look at the time period of traditional budgeting its fixed and specific, normally starting at the beginning of a fiscal year. The forecasted values of the budget also remains same during the whole cycle of the budget, the process of forecasting values is done keeping in view the values from the previous budget and the expectations are also made by looking at them. Finally the determination of goals is done by the top management, which is then communicated to lower management for implementation (lmmattersonline, n.d, n.p).The advantages of traditional or imperative budgeting approach are that it is easy to form, simple to manage and easy to evaluate. Furthermore every oneââ¬â¢s goals are clear and accountability can easily be done (lmmattersonline, n.d, n.p).On the other hand disadvantages of traditional or imperative budgeting approach are that is unable to cater the needs of modern organizations and that the decision making during the year becomes difficult because of inflexibility in budget (lmmattersonline, n.d, n.p).Zero Based Budgeting (ZBB)Zero based budgeting (ZBB) is an alternate of traditional budgeting approach mostly used by government or not for profit organizations. Using this approach means that managers have to justify all expenditure and not only the changes from previous year. The benchmark for this approach is zero rather than last yearââ¬â¢s budget (accountingformanagement, n.d, n.p).If we compare zero based budgeting (ZBB) with the traditional or imperative budgeting approach, in incremental approach the managers start from the last year budget and then add or subtract according to the predicted needs, taking last yearââ¬â¢s budget for granted as baseline, while on the other hand zero based budgeting approach requires considerable documentation from the managers to justify the budget (accountingformanagement, n.d, n.p).Which not only includes the master budget document but also the decision packages showing all the activities of the part icular department ranked according to their importance and the cost of each activity should also have to be determined.Top executives then cross check the decision packages and cut back the expenses from less important areas (accountingformanagement, n.d, n.p).Zero based budgeting (ZBB) is considered to be a good approach; the only issue with it is the number of times the review is carried out. As this approach is quite time consuming and too costly to justify on an annual basis, also that annual reviews become mathematical and the purpose of budgeting is lost (accountingformanagement, n.d, n.p).For some managers zero based budgeting (ZBB) is quite helpful for others it is nothing but the wastage of resources like time and money. So itââ¬â¢s up to an individual what he chooses? (accountingformanagement, n.d, n.p).The advantages of zero budgeting approach (ZBB) are that the resources are utilized properly, and the identification of need and benefits become justified. ZBB also lead towards cost effective ways. It helps to identify inflated budgets and then helps the service oriented organizations to identify their output. The decentralization is also one of the benefits which increases the motivation of staff and gives them the message that they are also accountable for their actions (accountingformanagement, n.d, n.p).

Meanings of Tool
Meanings of Tool Meanings of Tool Meanings of Tool By Maeve Maddox A reader wants to know whoââ¬â¢s right about the use of the word tool: My brother vehemently asserts that a tractor counts as a tool, since it is an invention that helps someone do something. However, the rest of [my friends and family] maintain that since it is mechanical as opposed to manual, it does not fit the general connotation of a tool. Please help in settling this discussion once and for all. Like many common English words, tool is used with both literal and figurative meanings. Take the word hammer, for example. At the most basic level of meaning, a hammer is an implement for pounding nails or breaking something up. But pianos contain hammers that strike strings without breaking them, to produce sound. King Edward I of England (1239-1307) is known as ââ¬Å"the Hammer of the Scotsâ⬠because of his military incursions into Scotland, when he did his best ââ¬Å"to hammerâ⬠the inhabitants into submission. So is it with tool. The noun tool has been with us since King Alfredââ¬â¢s day, when he used it in his translation of Boethius to refer to one of the necessities of life: ââ¬Å"a tool [to practice] some craft.â⬠Tool derives from an Old Germanic verb that meant ââ¬Å"to prepareâ⬠or ââ¬Å"to make.â⬠In his dictionary of 1755, Dr. Johnson (1709-1784) defined tool as ââ¬Å"any instrument of manual operation.â⬠The OED expands on this basic definition: tool noun: a mechanical implement for working upon something, as by cutting, striking, rubbing, or other process, in any manual art or industry; usually, one held in and operated directly by the hand (or fixed in position, as in a lathe), but also including certain simple machines, as the lathe; sometimes extended to simple instruments of other kinds, [like a lens]. By extension, tool can refer to anything that helps a person carry out a job. For example, the tools I use to write these articles about language include a computer, the Google Ngram Viewer, and an assortment of reference books. Shakespeare plays on two meanings of tool in the opening scene of Romeo and Juliet. Sampson and Gregory, characters in the employ of the Capulets, make jokes laced with sexual innuendo. When two men employed by the Montagues enter, Gregory says, ââ¬Å"Draw thy tool! here comes [sic] two of the house of the Montagues.â⬠One meaning of tool common in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s day was ââ¬Å"a weapon of war, especially a sword.â⬠Another meaning for tool that the audience would have been aware of was ââ¬Å"the male generative organ.â⬠In reference to a person, a tool is ââ¬Å"a person used by another for his own ends; one who is, or allows himself to be, made a mere instrument for some purposeâ⬠: Making a shocking statement of moral equivalence, Turnessà statedà in 2006,à We have to ask ourselves, are we being the tool of terrorists or the tool of the government? à The idiom ââ¬Å"tools of the tradeâ⬠refers to anything that used in a particular occupation to achieve an intended goal: While the strategic goal of professionalà campaigningà remains the same as it ever was- finding enough votes to win an election- theà tools of the tradeà have undergone, and continue to undergo, a permanent technological revolution. The expression ââ¬Å"to down toolsâ⬠means, ââ¬Å"to refuse to work, especially because you are not satisfied with your pay or working conditions,â⬠as in this headline: Clinical interns threaten to down tools over allowances To get back to the question that prompted this post, the readerââ¬â¢s brother is not wrong to refer to a tractor as a tool in the context of something used to perform a task. Here, in an article about missionaries in Belize, the word tool is used with both meanings, ââ¬Å"a handheld implementâ⬠and ââ¬Å"a means of getting something doneâ⬠: Fortunately, Paulà hadà shipped his tractor, bush hog, plows, tools and other farming implements to Belize. The tractor has proved to be an invaluable tool, especially with rock removal. Note: Tool has other uses as a verb. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Revolution Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Revolution - Essay Example The damage rested in the people's faith that the government could carry out economic policy. Specifically in the context of the government being able to do this without manipulation. During this time a remarkable suggestion of the replacement of adaptive expectations by rational expectations was the "Lucas Critique," This critique illustrated that expectation parameters, and endogenous variable dynamics, depend on policy parameters. (Muth p. 315) The presentation and discussion of this critique is taken into consideration for purposes of this discussion from the vantage point of the issue. The issue for this discussion is the issue of bounded rationality, where for transparency it is modeled to bounded rationality by means of simple adaptive expectations. The examination of this critique will illustrate that for a range of processes, monetary policy remains subject to the Lucas critique. (Cooley p 64) Nonetheless, "there are also regimes in which the expectation The adaptive expectations hypothesis was introduced by Cagan (1956) and Friedman (1957) as a plausible and empirically meaningful approach to modeling expectations of future variables in a world of uncertainty. "Their apparent empirical success led to widespread utilization of the adaptive expectations hypothesis before it was ultimately swept away by the rational expectation revolution, initiated by Muth (1961) and advanced by Lucas (1976) and Sargent and Wallace (1975). Rational expectations has the great advantage of providing optimal expectations; under the standard of optimality, adaptive expectations suffers by comparison and should be rejected. (Cooley 1973) One of the most salient implications of rational expectations is the critique of traditional policy making presented in Lucas (1976). The traditional theory of economic policy is characterized as treating the time series process followed by the economy as fixed and invariant with respect to exogenous changes in policy. Under rational expectations, however, the forecast or expectation (Muth 1973) rule will be affected by policy changes and, if the economy is in turn affected by expectations, these will alter the time series process followed by the economy. Lucas provided examples of this phenomenon based on prominent macroeconomic models. Our objective here is to reconsider the Lucas critique in the context of adaptive expectations. The starting point of our argument is Muth (1960). In that paper Muth showed that adaptive expectations, with an appropriate adaptation parameter, are fully rational if the variable being forecasted follows an exogenous IMA(1,1) stochastic process, i.e. if the first difference of the variable is a first-order moving average process. Rational expectations, however, assumes that the true process generating the data is known, an assumption that many feel to be implausibly strong. Recently Evans and Honkapohja (1993, 2001) and Sargent (1999) have argued that adaptive expectations may be a reasonable, if not fully rational, forecast method when the true process is unknown. Economic Structure: We consider a simple macroeconomic model, inspired by Lucas (1973) and Fischer (1977), in which aggregate output is affected by unanticipated price level changes. Let aggregate supply be specified as follows: qt = (pt pe t ), (1) where qt and pt

Rising Expectations of Nation Building Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Rising Expectations of Nation Building - Essay Example This has led to the sustainable development handed down from the various presidents that have led in the United States. This system of governance characterized by presidency has had a major revolution in the countries and continuous development. Therefore, the various presidents have contributed immensely towards the growth of the states which have been actualized through their different styles of leadership. Leadership styles refer to the different ways in which the various leaders formulate laws, provide the way forward to their people and motivate them for better outcomes. The effectiveness of a leader in his work will vary depending on the styles of governance. A good leader tends to apply various modes of governance while a bad leader will only resort to a particular mode. The types of leadership styles range from autocratic, democratic to free reign. An autocratic leader fails to consult the followers but will instead dictate what is to be done and how it is to be achieved (Tan nenbaum & Schmidt, 2003). A leader who improvises the free reign allows the followers to participate in the decision making. In this case, the people perform the task at hand but the leader becomes the one in charge. It is based on the notion that nobody can do everything and therefore, the leader selects some tasks as priorities and delegates the rest. A democratic leader will employ a few representatives in the decision making process while he sustains the final decision authority especially where the decision involves separate parts which are held by various people. In this case, the employees work as a team and have to be very skillful and with full information of their surroundings. In their leadership the leaders take into consideration the various human needs by trying to come up with teams, providing psychological support and providing accessible help to their surbordinates. They also motivate the people to work so as to increase production through the provision of work stru cture and goals. The United States Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and John Kennedy are said to be great democrats (Schriesheim, 2002). Their contributions to nation building are immense and they have used most of the styles of leadership to enhance their effectiveness. A major style that led to Presidentââ¬â¢s Kennedy success as a leader is his being a delegate. He elected some economic advisors to carry out decisions relating to the economic affairs and a committee for the legislature. In this manner, he was usually involved in the running of the state economic affairs. He also delegated work to his brother in- law to head the Peace Corps whose main aim was to deliver assistance to most of the underdeveloped countries of the world through the provision of construction materials, farming equipment, education facilities and health. In his quest to fight the communist as had been briefed by Eisenhower, President Kennedy dispatched Johnson to meet Diem of Vietnam so as to assure him o f his support. He provided military helicopters and more advisors to help n the fight. In being a delegate the president had various sectors being acted upon ensuring full running of the state including sectors such as defense, intelligence, trade, international relations, political arena and economic policy. This was equally applicable to Eisenhower who had advisors on

Salman Rushdies The Jaguar Smile Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Salman Rushdies The Jaguar Smile - Essay Example The historical narrative also highlighted several political behaviors. The most important of this is that its political culture is constantly being remade and is largely induced or influenced by external forces. This was demonstrated in the way the United has directed the Nicaraguan politics through the Somozas and how it caused the economic collapse of the country by imposing a trade embargo afterwards as a way to pressure and impact policy. This kind of intervention has already happened previously. Neighboring countries such as Mexico and even Britain have intervened in differing periods in the past. This has led to a kind of political culture in the country today that is characterized by an inherent desire to repel foreign enemies. The political success of the Sandinistas is the most glaring example of this phenomenon. Two-thirds of the electorate voted the Sandinistas to power in 1984, demonstrating the public displeasure for the US-armed Somoza, putting an end to years of Americ an intervention (Kenworthy 66). This behavior is also depicted in the strong desire to prevail or, at least, survive in the chaotic Central American politics. By Rushdieââ¬â¢s accounts and criticisms of the different Nicaraguan regimes, it became clear that the leader who held power tend to become autocratic and totalitarian. Even the Sandinistas themselves who wanted to be free from the previous repressive government eventually started muzzling the press. Censorship became such an important issue that Rushdie, himself, could not turn a blind eye although he still refused to call it despotic or comparable to the previous dictatorial government. This variable appears to highlight the distinctive... In order to understand the themes of the essays in the Jaguar Smile, it is important to reflect on the background of the Nicaraguan history during the Sandinistas' rise to power. The Jaguar Smile was published in 1987 after Salman Rushdie was invited by the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. It chronicled a period of the country's political history at the height of the Sandinista political movement. The narrative is the result of Rushdie's three-week long sojourn in Nicaragua. It provided enough materials for the author to document the Sandinistas' path to power. Essentially, the book used this subject as the landscape for his themes. In the process, he was able to provide a valuable account on a period in Central American history that has been characterized by a nation-building that typifies most of the Latin American experiences in addition to the American neo-colonialism. Fundamentally, it is a story of the underdog, rising to defeat stronger foes: the Anastazio Somoza Debayle dictatorship and, later, the US, through the Honduran Contra forces. In addition, the discourse of resistance in The Jaguar Smile has revealed several important insights about the political behavior of the players in the narrative. The implication of this point is that The Jaguar Smile is influential as a political text. It formed part of the long list of work concerning colonialism and nationalism. It revealed to the world how neocolonialism could stunt nation-building and breed a political culture that can eventually work against the hegemon.

Economic of Beekeeping Essay Example for Free
Economic of Beekeeping Essay As we know wax comb forms the environment in which the honeybee colony exists. The cells in the comb are used to rear brood, workers, drones and queens and also to store honey and pollen. The configuration of the wax combs provides insulation and channels the ventilation within the hive. To produce this fixed asset the honeybees must convert some of their liquid assets. The weight of wax within a BS deep brood frame is approximately 150g and therefore in the eleven frames making up a full national brood box there are 1650g of wax. The rate of exchange of honey to wax is 6. 25:1 [1]. In other words 6. 25 kg of honey is required to produce 1kg of wax. Therefore it can be seen that the wax within a brood box is equivalent to 10. 3 kg of honey. Feral honeybees, where possible, use new wax comb to rear brood and then reuse the wax comb to store pollen and honey. The practice of framed comb beekeeping has led to brood comb being repeatedly used to rear brood, cells being recycled six or seven times a year and then used similarly over many years. This is in contrast to the traditional beekeeping in skeps and the Warre hive beekeeping which have, as a fundamental feature, the annual regeneration of new comb for brood rearing. Evolution ensures that natural systems are energy efficient, so we might ask why bees in a natural environment do not so readily reuse brood comb. Brood combs can become reservoirs for pathogens and it appears that honeybees have evolved with behaviour patterns that recognise that the cost of new comb is less than the cost of disease. This could explain why EFB and AFB only became apparent as problems with the introduction of framed comb beekeeping.

New Orleans Jazz Band: Dag :: essays research papers
New Orleans Jazz Band: Dag "They have a word down South to describe the way you feel when your packed into a crowded dive at 1:00 AM, where the cigarette smoke is so thick it makes its own weather; and the waitress is slinging bourbon and Fritos while some bad-ass Jazz Funk band rocks the house as hard as Blue Ridge granite, and the sweat flows down from the stage like the cloudy waters of Pamlico Sound. There's a word for how you feel when you hear live Jazzy-funk music so sweet and hot, you just gotta shout something. The word is: DAG!" - Columbia Records There is only one place on earth where I though I could go to experience the true meaning of Jazz and to try to place myself in the shoes of all of the artists I have studied over the past semester. New Orleans, Louisiana is just that place. On April 10, 1996, I boarded a United Airlines plane bound, non- stop, for the "Home of Jazz." My goal in New Orleans was to try and have a comparable experience to that of one of the popular Jazz artists would have had upon his/her first visit to New Orleans in the early 1900s. Bourbon Street, the French Quarter, Jimmy Buffet's Maragaritaville, The Flamingo, the Garden District, and Moolate's all helped me to get into the proper frame of mind of experiencing true Jazz. The focus of this report will be on my life changing experience at a little place known as The House of Blues. This amazing combination of bar and stage created one of the most conducive atmospheres to music listening that I have ever been involved with. The stage, similar to the Fox, in Boulder and the bar/restaurant, similar to nothing both had a character and charm unique to itself. The ceilings in the bar area were covered by sculpted silhouettes of every major Jazz/Blues artist that ever played there. Images such as Louis Armstrong, Lester Young, Dizzie Gillespie, Buddy Bolden, Horace Silvers, and Jelly Roll Morton adorned the walls and ceilings of the HOB (House of Blues). Every beer on tap was a Louisiana original and the only kind of cooking done there was absolutely Cajun. On Thursday, April 11, 1996, I and 5 friends ventured into the legendary house of Blues. Headlining was a band entitled "Dag." This up and coming Blues/Jazz/Rock band has been touted as New Orleans newest small success story. With a label on Columbia Records and an album entitled Righteous, Dag is certainly a force in the Jazz industry.
